India, republic in southern Asia and the second most populous country in the world (next to China). It is bounded by the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China, by the independent states of Nepal and Bhutan, the Indian protectorate of Sikkim, and by the Sinkiang Uighur Autonomous Region of China (north); by Pakistan (northwest); and by Burma (east). A triangular-shaped peninsula, it thrusts southward from a mountainous Himalayan base, into the Indian Ocean between the Bay of Bengal (east) and the Arabian Sea (west). In northeastern India, an enclave is formed by Bangladesh, which adjoins the Indian states of Meghalaya, Tripura, Assam, and West Bengal and the Indian union territory of Mizoram. Indian languages, languages spoken in the Indian subcontinent. The languages of the region are generally classified as belonging to the following fami1ies Indo-European (the Indo-Iranian branch in particular), Dravidian, Austro-Asiatic (Munda in particular), and Sino-Tibetan. Fourteen languages are mentioned in the constitution of India: Hindi, Urdu, Panjabi, Bengali, Oriya, Marathi, Gujarati, Sanskrit, and Assamese, all belonging to the Indo-Aryan group of the IndoIranian branch of Indo-European; Kashmiri, belonging to the Dardic group of the IndoIranian branch of Indo-European; and Telegu, Tamil, Kannada (or Kanarese), and Malayalam, belonging to the Dravidian language family.
