| Inlet of the South China Sea bordering Thailand (southwest through north), Cambodia, and South Vietnam (northeast). It is 300 to 350 mi (500 to 560 km) wide and 450 mi long. The Chao Phraya and Nakhon Chai Si rivers enter the gulf near its head. The main harbours in Thailand are located at Pattani, Songkhla (Sing‘gora), Pak Phanang (port for Nakhon Si Thammarat), and Chanthaburi; in Cambodia at Ream, Kampot, and Kep; and in South Vietnam at Rach Gia. The shallow waters along the gulf’s coast provide important fishing grounds. the standard spoken and literary language of Thailand, belongs to the Tai language family of Southeast Asia. Like the other Tai languages and like Chinese (a Sino-Tibetan language), Thai is basically monosyllabic in word form and makes use of tones to distinguish between otherwise identical words. There are five distinct tones in Thai: mid, low, falling, high, and rising. Despite its monosyllabic basis, Thai makes extensive use of compound words, reduplication (repetition) of words or syllables, and terms borrowed from Sanskrit (an Indo-European language), all of which contribute to the formation of words. |
